Why do you love working for the 4 North Beauty Collective? We are a cozy space located right in downtown Hudson. The salon feels like a little house in the middle of many beautiful, local, small-town businesses. The St Croix Valley community is amazing to be a part of. We always innovate and dive deep into new trends and education to bring the best hair care. We thrive by treating one another as a team and focusing on the clients with full empathy and passion. It’s what the world needs right now. Our people are cared for and we are honored to be the choice for their beauty care needs. We know how individuals feel makes for a better version of them to reflect into the world.

When should I stop coloring my hair? At what age should I let the gray grow in?This is all personal preference. What are you ready for? Most people continue to color the gray because it softens it. When gray hair grows in, it can often be unruly, curly, coarse, and hard to manage. The color process calms that down and allows for easier styling. There are also ways to slowly embrace the gray and leave that outgrowth line of demarcation softer than an all-over solid color would offer. I like to focus on this as a mini meditation for those deciding on what to do: “If you decide you hate growing out the gray and it is not time, we can color it again. Hair changes are not permanent. It is temporary. So change it up and explore! It’s what it’s all about.

Why did you choose to go to school to be a hairstylist?"As the owner, I went to beauty school because I always looked up to my hairstylist growing up. I loved the time spent in the chair and how it made me feel. Hairstyling is a loving and caring profession, but it also has a fun, creative side! As hairstylists, we get to express our creativity and experience a sense of freedom that many other professions don’t offer. I also love the people! The psychology behind the chair is fascinating to me—hair appointments are about much more than just the hair. They’re part of a person’s journey toward healing and self-love."

What is the difference between a trim and a haircut?Nothing. We are still cutting your hair. I believe that the word “trim” is used to tell us that not much is wanted to be cut off but sometimes we are told a trim and to remove 6 inches. The word “trim” is a cue for us to dig deeper into the consult to understand what is wanted. We always welcome inspo pics to help bridge the communication and if you don’t have one that is ok too! We will figure it out together. You never need to feel like you have to know the lingo or say the “wrong” thing. It’s our job as professionals to help you feel comfortable and understand what you want in your visit.

How often should I be shampooing? As often as needed, but make sure it is professional-grade shampoo. We always suggest no longer than 3 days. After this time frame, it is really important for your skin/scalp to be cleansed and your hair will love the moisture.

Why are professional hair products more expensive?Great question! Most people don’t know the answer to this. A shampoo should gently open the cuticle and cleanse it, along with the scalp, while the conditioner should Hh balance the hair, scalp, and close that cuticle back down. Drug store products, no matter how pretty the bottle, do not offer that. Products like Pantene, Suave, and even the fancy ones at Target are most likely made with a detergent and wax. The “detergent” is your shampoo and the wax is the “conditioner”. That is not beneficial to the health of your hair because it is an illusion. The detergent provides the bubbles and the wax imitates for a short period, the conditioner. This wax can also build up on your scalp causing thinness, excessive oil production, scalp irritation, and shedding. Professional products give you the benefits that serve the whole purpose of cleansing your hair. Don’t let the size of the bottle fool you because the ingredients are highly concentrated. You only need to use a minimal amount. If your hair doesn’t suds, then your hair isn’t wet enough to dilute and help that professional product work. Shampoo your scalp and condition your ends.

Why do some stylists seem to take off more than what I asked for? This comes to communication. We pride ourselves in a great consultation. This is where the dialogue is so important. We have rulers on our combs and we use them here at 4 North Beauty Collective. Most people's hair naturally grows longer and faster in the back then on the sides. This is always something we consider when talking about length.
-
How much should I tip? Why do I have to tip? Most people tip about 22%. In our industry, it is a thank you for your time and interaction. We always look at it as a gift and a “thank you” vs. an expectation.
-
Why do my stylists try to sell me products? We love making professional recommendations because we know the benefits it has for you hair. Buying from your stylist also supports them and the salon.
-

Is it hard to deal with people? For the most part, no. We have a great community and our guests are exceptional. We do try to match people up with who we think will serve them best. It is important to enjoy your time and company while getting your hair done.
